Founded in Fall of 1989 by a group of ex-college rugby playing friends as well as a some local ex-pat players, the Bombers joined the Met NY Union in the former Division 3B.
Bayonne struggled in the early years but did manage to win the Jersey Cup in its first year.
The majority of the club’s player base comes from Hoboken with the remainder coming from Bayonne, Jersey City and surrounding areas.
Bayonne competed in Division 3 through the 90’s. The club had various successes winning the Lansdowne tournament for 3 years straight from 1997 -99.
In 1999 the club went undefeated in winning the MetNY Division 3 and being promoted to Division 2.
While in Division 2, the bombers went on to win the Monmouth Cup, Jersey Cup, Long Island and Princeton 7’s tournaments.
In 2003 the Bombers went undefeated in division 2 and hosted the Northeast Championships in Bayonne. Bayonne ended-up narrowly losing the championship game to the Connecticut Yankees. The Bombers were the #2 cede from the Northeast and ranked #14 in the country. In the Final 16 the bombers crashed out to Haggis who then got disqualified, but had the comfort of knowing that the eventual winners were the CT Yankees who had waltzed through the championships.
In 2004 Bayonne were promoted to Division 1 where we remained for 3 years competing valiantly against some of the strongest D1 teams in the country.
In 2007 Bayonne are again back in Division 2 where we won the Monmouth 15’s tournament as well as the Cheesesteak 7’s and Princeton 7’s tournaments.
In 2008 Bayonne completed a Three Peat at the NJ 7’s Tournament and finished 4th in Division 2 which qualified us for Playoffs. Bayonne Beat the #1 cede Monmouth and #2 cede
Morris to take the #1 cede from Met NY. Bayonne then went on to play in the Northeast Division Championships but failed against the #2 cede Hartford.
In 2009 Bayonne competed in several 7’s tournaments, winning for a 4th time the NJ 7’s and losing in the final of the Cheesesteak 7’s and Semi-Final in the Newport 7’s.
The Bombers completed a sweep of Division 2 in the fall with an unblemished 8 – 0 record and qualified for the Northeast Championships as the #1 cede from Met NY. Bayonne defeated local rival Montauk in the Semi Final and defeated NERFU #1 cede and undefeated Middlesex RFC to become Northeast Division 2 Champions with a perfect 10 – 0 record.
The club has an active Summer 7’s program and plays in numerous tournaments as well as organizing a social league in the Hoboken area.
The club embarks on annual overseas tours and thus far have traveled to: Ireland 1995, Bahamas 2000, Bermuda 2001, Cayman Islands 2002, Bahamas 2003, Cayman Islands 2004, Tortola 2005, Turks & Caicos 2006, Cayman Islands 2008.
The club is also involved in many local and national charitable organizations and have raised thousands of dollars for The American Cancer Society, The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, The Bayonne Community Cancer Support Group, Toys for Tots and The St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
