Mike Vogt scored three tries and Chris Arnold added two leading
Bayonne to a convincing victory over perennial D2 powerhouse, Montauk
53-12 last Saturday in Bayonne.
The win was the Bomber’s second in a row and raised their record to
2-2-1 with three matches to go. The win keeps the Bombers in the
thick of the Met-NY D2 playoff race, and with upcoming matches against
Montclair, Morris and Monmouth, Bayonne once again controls their
playoff destiny.
Bayonne scored first as Todd Gallen scored 4-minutes into the second
half, taking an offload from fullback Travis Lane down the sideline,
and cutting back to the center to score his fifth try of the season.
Scrumhalf Jack Seymour scored his first try of the season moments
later, giving Bayonne an early 14-0 lead. Montauk responded by
controlling the ball for close to 5-minutes and scoring their first
try at 14:20. That would wrap up the scoring for the first half, as
Bayonne settled for a 14-5 halftime lead.
Bayonne dominated the second half, scoring six tries in a 20-minute
span. Mike Vogt scored three, Chris Arnold touched down two and
newcomer Hershel Rawls scored his first Bayonne try as the Bombers ran
seemingly untouched through the Montauk defense.
Mike Vogt now leads the Bombers with six tries on the season, and
Chris Arnold has scored 64 total points through five matches. See
attached for a summary of Bayonne’s scorers.
Bayonne takes on Montclair this coming Saturday, looking for their third win in a row. While the match was originally scheduled to be played at Montclair, a conflict with their field forced the match to be played at the 16th Street Park in Bayonne.
A-side kickoff is at 1:00 PM, with the B-side match to follow.

Miller Playing their most complete match of the fall season, Bayonne topped previously unbeaten Lansdowne RFC last Saturday by the score of 27-24 at Tibbens Park in Yonkers, NY.
With over 30-players available during the week, Bayonne was able to put in two intense training sessions and it paid off on Saturday. Lansdowne entered the match 3-0 on the season and Bayonne finally played to their potential showing that they could play with any team in the league.
Lansdowne kicked the ball early and often and put Bayonne under pressure early with a kick deep inside the Bayonne 22. Lansdowne was able to counter an attempted clearance by Bayonne and scored their first try of the day at the 8-minute mark to take a 5-0 lead.
Bayonne responded well, taking the ensuing kickoff downfield and after 7-8 minutes of sustained pressure by the Bayonne pack, Mike Crafton scored his second try of the season, tying the score at 5-5. Chris Arnold slotted the conversion giving Bayonne an early 7-5 lead.
Bayonne immediately went on the attack driving the ball once again inside the Lansdowne 22 meter line, but Lansdowne’s defense was excellent, holding Bayonne to a penalty kick by Arnold at 30:00.
Lansdowne continued to kick the ball downfield, and a seemingly harmless kick inside the Bayonne 22-meter line was mishandled by Bayonne leading to an easy try by Lansdowne. Bayonne responded quickly and Chris Arnold hit his second penalty kick of the half, giving Bayonne a 13-10 lead at halftime.
Bayonne maintained their aggressive style of play to start off the second half. After having a try called back for a forward pass minutes into the second half, Nelson Luna scored his first try of the season at 45:00. A Chris Arnold conversion gave Bayonne a 20-10 lead. Lansdowne then countered with a sustained drive that took them all the way downfield, keeping possession of the ball for close to 10-minutes and finally punching in a try at 57:00 cutting the Bayonne lead to three.

Chris Arnold hit a very difficult conversion and Bayonne again went up by 10.
A furious finish saw the Lansdowne forwards score another try at 79:00 before time expired giving Bayonne a well earned victory.
Bayonne takes on Montauk this Saturday at 1:00 PM at the 16th Street Park. A-side kickoff is at 1:00 PM, with the B-side to follow immediately after.

Bayonne hosted Rockaway RFC on Saturday at 16th Street Park and despite a spirited first half, fell to the Fishheads by the score of 40-25.
A Bayonne knock-on the opening kickoff would serve as a sign of things to come. Rockaway took possession near the 22-meter line and quickly scored their first try of the match to take a 5-0 lead. Bayonne responded well and dominated Rockaway for the remainder of the half. A much fitter Bayonne pack dictated the pace of the match, and the Bayonne backs were able to move the ball thru the hands setting up Todd Gallen for his fourth try of the year at 10:20. Mike Vogt added a try on a crash ball from 10-meters out (his second try of the season), giving the Bombers a 12-5 lead. A Kyle Mallory try followed by a Chris Arnold penalty kick just before the end of the half gave Bayonne a seemingly comfortable 25-5 halftime lead.
The second half was a disaster. Missed tackles, knock-ons and an overall lack of urgency by Bayonne allowed Rockaway to score 35 unanswered points in the second half. An experienced Rockaway pack sorted themselves out at halftime and spun the Bayonne pack like a dreidel, winning every second half scrumdown. The Rockaway backs put their sevens skills to good use moving the ball from sideline to sideline before exploiting gaps in the Bomber backline for three scores.
After a bye week, Bayonne will take on Lansdowne RFC on October 4th in the Bronx.

The Bayonne Bombers took on the Village Lions on Saturday at the Lion’s new pitch on Randall’s Island. The heat and humidity contributed to a sluggish start for the Bombers, who gave up a quick try 12-minutes in and trailed 19-0 at the 27-minute mark. The Bombers finally found their legs, and some inspired pack play lead to a Mike Crafton try at 30-minutes. Bayonne took the ensuing kickoff and marched down field seemingly pushing the Lion’s pack backwards. Chris Arnold took an inside pass from 30 meters out, and switched with Todd Gallen inside the 5-meter line who raced to the opposite sideline for Bayonne’s second score, Gallen’s third try of the season. A much fitter squad, Bayonne was clearly outplaying the Lions for the last 20-minutes of the half and had established momentum going into halftime.
A yellow card shortly before the half, and another minutes into the second half left the Bombers down two men for nearly 8-minutes, and the Lions were able to take advantage of it, putting up two tries in that span, and building a lead that would become insurmountable. An undermanned Bayonne side was uncompetitive in the closing 20-minutes and the Lions were victorious with a final score of 46-19.

Bayonne opened up the fall 2008 league season on Saturday drawing Princeton Athletic Club 19-19 in Princeton.
Todd Gallen opened the scoring 13 minutes into the first half, taking a skip pass from Chris Arnold near midfield and racing down the sideline to give the Bombers an early 5-0 lead. That lead would not last for long as PAC took advantage of a mishandled ball near the try line, which was collected by their outside centre for an easy try, tying the match at 5-5 after 20 minutes. Poor tackling by Bayonne would allow Princeton to notch another try at the 25th minute, and PAC held a 12-5 lead at the half.
PAC punched in a quick try minutes into the 2nd half to take a 19-5 lead, but that was where their scoring would end. Bayonne responded moments later when Mike Vogt took a crash ball up the middle for his first try of the year at the 51st minute. The subsequent conversion by Chris Arnold would cut the deficit to 19-12.
Solid defense by the Bayonne centers thwarted any further scoring threats by the PAC back line, and with just minutes remaining and Bayonne playing at a man advantage due to a PAC player being sent off with a yellow card, Todd Gallen scored his second try of the match taking a crash ball and scoring untouched from 20 meters out bringing Bayonne to within two. Chris Arnold slotted the conversion, tying the match at 19-19.
The Bombers had several attempts while on the attack in the final minutes but were unable to score as time expired.
